CNP’s Innovative Arts-Based HIV Advocacy Documented in New Publication

Atlanta, GA — May 13, 2025 – The Counter Narrative Project (CNP) is proud to announce the publication of a revolutionary peer-reviewed research article that documents its innovative work in reducing HIV stigma through community-based, art-driven advocacy. The article can be found in Health Communication, a leader in public health that accepts less than 10% of all research. Your Status is Artful:” Exploring the Counter Narrative Project’s Role in Arts-Based HIV Advocacy for Black Queer Men’, documents the power of narrative and art to challenge outdated stigmas and amplify Black queer voices in HIV advocacy.

The Counter Narrative Project (CNP), a nonprofit founded in 2014 in Atlanta, frequently employs arts-based strategies to challenge HIV stigma and advocate for narrative and policy change for the Black queer community.

The research, led by Dr. Deion Scott Hawkins, academic, advocate, and thought leader, centers on two case studies: a Zoom reading of the play “One and Two” and a powerful poetry reading of Essex Hemphill’s work at a biomedical conference.

“This article is more than just about publishing research. It’s a testament to Black queer resilience and how we catalyze our own narratives and ignite cultural change,” said Dr. Hawkins. “Black queer men are not just research subjects, but we are artists, researchers, collaborators, and creators,” he added.

This study matters not just for what it found, but for how it was done. By partnering with, not just writing about, Black queer communities, the study rejects extractive and predatory research models. It proves that HIV stigma can be meaningfully challenged through culturally grounded, arts-based advocacy. At its core, the piece honors the lived experiences of artists, advocates, and community members who have long been the heartbeat of HIV advocacy. Nothing about us should be without us, including research.

CNP is a narrative change organization that centers the lives and stories of Black queer men. Our foundation and our approach are rooted in the arts, HIV justice, and collective memory. As we grapple with the current political climate and the challenges posed to our movement, the role of the arts as agents of social change has never been more critical or more necessary.

The Counter Narrative Project encourages journalists, educators, policymakers, and community leaders to engage with this work and continue the conversation about the role of art in public health advocacy.
