About The Counter Narrative Project (CNP)

CNP shifts narratives about Black gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men. We stand in the tradition of Bayard Rustin, James Baldwin, Essex Hemphill, and other movement leaders, artists, organizers, and visionaries committed to countering narratives and speaking truth to power.

About the Position

CNP is looking for a copy editor for a temporary position (contractor) for up to three months. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, organized, flexible, collaborative, and is passionate about public health and social justice. The copy editor will work with co-editors of a book project to support an anthology manuscript focused on HIV activism and racial justice. This is a virtual position. 

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit, proofread, and fact-check book manuscript focused on public health, HIV, and social justice 

  • Copyedit text, which may include editing grammar, spelling, clarity, and factualness. 

  • Maintain open, clear, and consistent communication with editorial team

  • Position will report directly to the book co-editors

  • Perform several rounds of proofreading and editorial support to ensure quality of manuscript through final approval.

Basic Qualifications

  • Five or more years of editorial experience

  • Demonstrated ability to edit for final delivery on deadline

  • Very high attention to detail

  • Familiarity with various citation styles: APA, MLA, Chicago

  • Experience working on deadlines. 

  • Collaborative work style, ability to manage multiple inputs.

  • Experience working with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet, Gmail).

  • Strong written communication skills.

  • Comfort with evolving projects and complex direction 

  • Excellent time-management skills
