About the Opportunity
The CNP Narrative Leadership Institute is a program where we train individuals on various aspects of storytelling to advance social change. These trainings are organized into “labs.” These Leadership Lab workshops will be a place for folks, at all levels, to play and explore aspects of creative writing.
Workshop Topics
Session 1: Persona Poems - If You Could Be Anyone For a Day
Have you ever imagined what it must be like to live someone else’s life? Would you be able to say things you feel you can’t say in your space in the world? What would be different about your life if you were that person – or animal, or thing? (Like a jaguar? Or a shoe?) How would your life be better – or worse? What issues would you be concerned about? Would they be different than the issues you’re concerned about now? When you write a persona poem, you take on the life or circumstances of someone or something else in the world and write from their perspective. In this class we’ll read some persona poems, talk about what we like or don’t like about them, and work on writing some persona poems of our own.
Session 2: Lusting for Lists
There’s probably a billion ways for us to write ourselves into the world; one of them is to burrow into familiar forms and mess with them from the inside out. And what’s more familiar, more mundane than the list? How many types of lists are there – the To Do List? Shopping List? List of Pros & Cons? Bucket List? In this workshop we’re going to spend some time reading amazing list poems by some amazing poets and then with the help of suggestive writing prompts write some list poems of our own.
